What makes a sealed surface slick
A heavy, high-gloss film sitting on top of the paver can reduce traction when wet, because your foot is meeting smooth coating rather than textured stone. That is the scenario people picture when they worry about sealing.
It is avoidable. The slickness comes from the finish and the film thickness, not from sealing itself.
How we handle pool decks
On pool decks we favor a lower-sheen finish and add a fine traction additive into the sealer. The additive is invisible once cured but restores the micro-texture that bare pavers have naturally.
We also avoid over-applying. Two controlled coats bond better and stay safer underfoot than one heavy flood coat.

Untreated pavers are not automatically safer
Unsealed pool decks grow algae and mildew in the pores, and biological growth is genuinely slippery. A properly sealed and maintained deck resists that growth, which for many families is a net gain in safety.
