When repair is enough
Most paver problems are surface and base problems in a small area: a few rocking pavers, a low spot where water pools, a washed-out joint line, or edges spreading where there is no restraint.
All of those are repaired by pulling the affected pavers, correcting the base underneath, re-laying, and re-sanding the joints. Done right, you cannot find the seam a month later. This is the majority of the repair calls we go out on.

- Joints that have washed out and refill with weeds
- Pooled water in a low spot after rain
- Edge pavers spreading out at the border
When replacement is the right call
Replacement makes sense when the pavers themselves are finished or the base has failed across the whole area: pavers crumbling or spalling, a surface that has settled everywhere, or a previous installation laid over a bad base with no compaction.
Age matters too. A 20-year-old installation with fading color, deep staining, and widespread wear sometimes costs more to keep repairing than to replace — especially once you decide you want a different pattern or layout anyway.
One question that decides it
Ask whoever gives you an estimate this: is the problem the pavers, or the base under them?
If it is the base in one area, you repair. If it is the base everywhere, and the pavers are worn too, replacement with a properly compacted base is the investment that actually lasts. Be wary of anyone who jumps straight to 'replace it all' without explaining what failed underneath — and equally wary of a repair quote on a base that has failed across the board.
